Feather and Down as Filling Material
General
Down and feathers are the best filling material to provide the qualities and functions required in bedding and clothing:
- They are lighter than any other filling material
- They maintain a comfortable climate in the bed
- They balance the changing heat demands
The insulation needed to fulfill these tasks depends above all on the temperature of the enviroment and the individual heat demands. By choosing the appropriate product construction together with the optimum filling quality and filling weight, the required properties can best be achieved with down and feather.
For bedding
Feather/down bedding products, i.e. quilts/comforters and pillows are adjustable to the sleeping habits or other comfort requirements of the individual. They guarantee the desired recovery of the body. They manage the humidity, emitted through the skin.
For clothing
good isolation at minimum weight provides a good combination of fashion and function. Extreme alpinists prefer down jackets.
For sleeping bags
high insulation, low weight and little stow-away volume are the attributes of down filled sleeping bags.
Handling
Feather/down products are easy to take care of, a daily fluffing is sufficient for a long time. they are washable ( see carelabel) and therefore very hygienic
Durability/costs
Feather/down products have a long life. The filling power resilience) and thus the high insulation properties remain stable for years. Therefore high quality products filled with down and feathers are a good investment.
Quality factors
Down percentage
the higher the percentage of down, the more cuddle and light is the product.
Filling power
A higher filling power means better resilience and therefore more volume at less weight. The result is a product with better insulation.
Cleanliness
Down and feathers used as filling material are thoroughly washed. The high degree of cleanliness of the filling material results in more comfort and better durability:
the high filling power will be maintained for a longer time.
Down and Feathers are not the cause for house dust mite allergy.
Down and feathers in finished products are washed and sterilized and therefore bear absolutely no danger of avian flu infection.
